Transport Malta started works to widen Vjal ix-Xarolla in Żurrieq a few months ago. The project was split in two parts. The first part is mostly completed. The contractor cleared most of the area to be widened and is building the new retaining walls.
The second part of the project, which will commence in the coming weeks, entails the re-construction of the road completely. The road will have an additional carriageway along Vjal ix-Xarolla extending all the way to Triq il-Kuċċard in Safi. Transport Malta will replace the existing services, install new ones and will form a service road with parking for residents.
The superintendence for cultural heritage declared that there is a great possibility of finding archaeological remains in the area. The superintendence requested extensive archeological monitoring. The storms we endured during the worst of winter made it harder for the underlying material to be compacted. These factors, unfortunately, delayed the project.
However, the tender for the second part of the project will be adjudicated in the coming days and works are expected to proceed at a faster pace. Transport Malta remains committed to complete the project for the benefit of the people of the area who have long been asking for it. Transport Malta is investing €2 million on the project which will help regenerate the neighbourhood.
