Kappara Project has reached a very advanced stage. Following completion of works on the East side and the central part of the project, works will now focus on the University side.
Works on the east side of the new bridge are completed and new temporary traffic management will be implemented as from this evening.
New traffic arrangements
As from this evening, cars towards St. Julian’s will drive on the new bridge, on two traffic lanes instead of one. This is a temporary traffic arrangement whilst works are being carried out on the west side.
This new temporary traffic arrangement will allow two traffic lanes in both directions; vehicles in the direction of St. Julian’s will use the new bridge and traffic towards the University will proceed as per current traffic arrangement.
Access to Sliema Road San Gwann will either be possible from the junction at Mater Dei Hospital, or from Triq Antonio Schembri or from the junction at Reggie Miller.
The area remains a construction site with speed limit of 30Km per hour. Drivers are advised to drive carefully.
May we remind that for easy reference, alternative routes may be viewed on news.transport.gov.mt
Works in the coming weeks
In the coming days, works will focus on the West bridge. Works include the installation of crash barriers, laying of membrane and layers of asphalt.
The road on the University side will be widened and reconstructed. Works on the tunnel for pedestrians from the Reggie Miller junction are in progress. In the coming weeks, the University tunnel will be reconstructed to make it wider, more secure and to last for many years. The tunnel which is below Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli provides access between the National Sports Complex and the University.
